Jason Chan Character Design 1: Style Exploration – Adobe Photoshop

Sometimes a client has a strong story but they don’t know exactly what they want for the visual look of their game or movie. Enter the ChanMan. In this video we see him go through a broad range of stylistic iterations based on the same lead male character. The client can then use these ideas and move forward with a much clearer visual direction. This gets to the heart of concept art, and the more an artist is able to work in a variety of different styles the more he/she will be able to help …

Very cool. I wonder if he uses a tablet for that. I bought a Wacom a while back and found out that using the Wacom pen just doesn’t feel the same as pen on paper.

Takes way too long and I have to keep switching back and forth between mouse and pen.

    Nice vid, and thanks.

I’d say he’s probably using a Wacom Cintiq, which I find much more intuitive than a normal tablet, since you’re looking at your hand while drawing.

True, it does feel different. And takes getting used to. I found what helps me is a little trick I learned from a colleague.

Get a sheet of vellum from a local art store and tape it to the tablet. Make sure that it’s a strong sheet that will stand up to a fair amount of use.

Also, make sure that what ever you get has a bit of texture to it NOT something smooth or that would defeat the purpose. ;)

  11. MassiveDVD says:

It’s photoshop start to finish, actually. he usually has his menus hidden or on another monitor. (tab key is the shortcut for that).
